Aurora Hunting in Fairbanks

One of my absolute favorite things to do in Fairbanks is go aurora hunting. Alaska is known for its spectacular displays on green, purple and red lights in the sky. If you have never seen them before definitely add viewing them to your bucket list!

Fairbanks is one of the best places to view the aurora because the skies are often clear. Although it can be extremely cold, it is so worth the freezing toes. Just where some warm clothes, a lot of blankets, and some hot chocolate!

My favorite spots include driving up the Old Steese highway north of the main city.( the key is to get away from the big city lights that will drown out the aurora.) My boyfriend and I will usually find a pullout to park in and then take some fantastic pictures. Don’t forget your camera but just keep in mind that some things are not meant to be caught on camera. Enjoy the moment while it lasts.  Another great spot to view the lights is at the Chena Hot Springs. Nothing beats chilling in hot springs with your hair freezing into icicles and the lights dancing above your head.

Here are some photo’s of our awesome sightings! Photo credit: Conner Truskowski
